Many problems in this world exist. For example, gender inequality, HIV/AIDS, and environment sustainability. Among all, poverty is the greatest one and others are either a consequence of it or can’t even be solved without solving poverty beforehand. Poverty is the inability of getting choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. This paper is going to argue that poverty is the greatest problem in the world because it affects the most people and causes other problems in the world.
Poverty is the greatest problem in the world because it affects the most people. Currently, at least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. The poorest 40% of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of the global income but the riches 20% accounts three quarters of world income. Inequality plays a big role in poverty. Unequal distribution of resources causes poverty. In India, 29.8% of its population lives under the poverty line. In Mozambique, 52% of its population lives less than $1.25 a day. In the third world and developing countries, poverty is plays an important factor that limits its development. However, poverty does not only exist in LEDCs (Less Economically Developed Countries), but also in many MEDCs (More Economically Developed Countries). For example, in the United States of America, including 20% of the children, 15.1% of the Americans live under the poverty line. Yet, poverty does not always decrease after time. In 2011, child poverty had increased 35% more than the level in 2007. We can understand that countries even like the United States of America still have a large portion of poverty. Poverty does not only exist between people that are living in LEDCs, MEDCs are often also suffering from this issue. Therefore, we can consider poverty as the greatest problem in the world because it affects the most people.
Besides being the most worldwide problem, poverty also causes other problems. A person living in poverty means he or she doesn’t have enough finance to support his or her necessities, such as food and water. Therefore, poverty will cause hunger and the lack of water. The lack of education is also caused by poverty. People that are living in a poor condition won’t have the ability to send their children to take basic education. Thus, poverty will be a hindrance to improve the education level in a nation. The spread of HIV/AIDS are also considered one of the results of poverty. A weak healthcare system with poverty will even worsen the issue. People in poverty are only focusing on how to make more money each day, and they won’t pay attention to their body condition. Eventually, diseases such as HIV/AIDS will be easier spread to more people, and the issue of spreading diseases will not be solved. After all examples that are caused by poverty, we can get a conclusion that poverty is the greatest problem in the world because it causes other problems. In order to solve the other problem, solving poverty first is the fundamental method.
